When a vacancy occurs or is anticipated, the City authorizes the Police Department to begin the selection process. The selection process is announced in the local newspaper The Pantagraph and on this web site.

The selection process begins with an orientation, a written aptitude test, and a physical test (the P.O.W.E.R. test). Information on what the P.O.W.E.R. test consists of and how to prepare for the P.O.W.E.R. test may be found on the Police Training Institute’s web site located at http://www.pti.uiuc.edu/ An intensive background investigation of the remaining candidates is conducted by Officers of the Leroy Police Department. Candidates who pass this stage are then invited to a panel interview. The panel consists of the City Manager, a member or members of the police department, and selected leaders of the community.

The top candidate, with City Manager and City Council approval, is then given a conditional offer of employment. Upon accepting the offer, the candidate then completes a medical physical and a psychological examination.

The selected individual then begins a one year probationary period.

The individual attends a 12 week (480 hours) training program at the Police Training Institute located on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Upon graduation from PTI, the individual is awarded Law Enforcement Officer Certification by the State of Illinois.

The individual then begins a 12 week Field Training Program with the Leroy Police Department. During this training program, the new officer receives one on one training in the field by experienced officers who are state certified as Field Training Officer’s (FTO’s). Upon successful completion of the Field Training Program, the new officer is then certified for solo patrol by the Chief of Police and is assigned to a patrol shift.

The Leroy Police Department offers its employees a competitive salary that includes annual cost of living increases, annual increases based upon performance evaluations, longevity increases at (6) six months, (1) one year, (1 1/2)one and a half years, and (5) five years. The City of Leroy provides outstanding health care package that includes dependant coverage. The city currently pays 88% of premiums and employees pay 12% by payroll deductions. The City of Leroy participates in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund.
